Gravestones on the North side of the churchyard.
1. James TRUMBALL died 30 March 1771 aged 61

2. Sarah Ann BROWNSON daughter of Edward and Rebecca Brownson of West Malling died 13 August 1786 aged 19, also the above Edward Brownson died 21 December 1799 aged 53, also William son of the above Edward and Rebecca Brownson of West Malling died 25 March 1769.

3. Rebecca wife of Edward BROWNSON of West Malling, eldest daughter of Thomas HODSOLL late of Wrotham, and grand daughter of John and Rebecca HODSOLL late of South Ash, died 20 July 1783 aged 39. Left surviving issue one daughter viz Sarah Ann.

4. Mrs Sarah HODSOLL spinster, late of West Malling, youngest & last surviving daughter of Thomas Barbar Hodsoll formerly of Wrotham, died 24 March 1825 aged 77.

5. Headstone with Hodsoll coat on the top - a fess wavy between 3 wells:- Mary wife of William SCODD died 27 December 1817. Left surviving issue one daughter viz Eleanor.

6. Ann HODSOLL of Wrotham eldest daughter of Charles and Mercy Hodsoll of South Ash died 5 March 1816.

7. Headstone with Hodsoll coat on the top:- Margaret daughter of Charles and Mercy HODSOLL of South Ash died 3 October 1786.

8. Ann LAWFORD late of Dartford died 5 July 1803 aged 59.

9. Ann Lawford HODSOLL died 7 April 1789 aged 8 weeks & 4 days. Eleanor Hodsoll died 5 June 1797 aged 7 months 5 days. James Hodsoll died 19 March 1801(?) aged 6 months 5 days.

10. Altar tomb - on one side - Mrs Rebecca SKUDDER wife of Mr Thomas Skudder late of Hunton died 4 August 1744 aged 33, also the above Thomas Skudder died 10 May 1779 aged 80. On the end - Elizabeth daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Skudder died 22 June 1757 aged 21.

11. Altar tomb - Mr Thomas SKUDDER of the parish of Hunton died 23 January 1810 aged 68. Left issue Thomas and Rebecca.

15. (2) Sophia Lambarde daughter of Multon LAMBARDE Esq. of Sevenoaks died 21 June 1838 aged 47.

16. (3) Mary Salwey wife of the Rev. R. Salwey, rector of this Parish, died 2 October 1848 in her 47th year.

17. Henry KETTEL fourth son of the late William Kettle Esq. of Wateringbury died 29 November 1838 aged 37.

18. Anna Maria WARD widow of Daniel Ward formerly of Shooter's Hill died at Ash 26 April 1866 aged 77.

22. William GLADDISH died 11 August 1753 aged 52. Also Mary his wife died 4 August 1762 aged 62.

23. Altar tomb - on top - John GLADDISH of this Parish, Yeoman, died 4 April 1747 aged 76. [on the side] Mary wife of Jno. Gladdish of ys ppish Yeo. and daughter of Robert Allen of Hadlow died 19 November 1741 in her 67th year. She left issue six sons, five daughters and 24 grandchildren.

24. William GLADDISH of the Parish of Chalk died 28 October 1769 aged 31. He left issue two children viz Townsend and Sarah.

25. James GLADDISH late of Eynsford - son of John and Mary Gladdish. Died 13 January 1758 aged 38. Left issue by Elizabeth his wife two sons and one daughter viz John, Thomas and Elizabeth. Also Thomas Gladdish son of the above James Gladdish died suddenly at Ridley on 10 July 1801 aged 47.

139. James DEANE late of Oxted in Surrey son of Jas. and Mage Deane of this Parish died 23 June 1789 aged 48.

140. John OLIVER died 5 November 1889 aged 52. Also Gerald Edward Oliver died 5 February 1884 aged 11 months.

141. James DEANE of this parish died 19 March 1755 aged 56. Also Mercy Deane his wife who died December 12 1778 aged 72. He left issue 3 sons and 5 daughters viz William, James, Davis, Mary, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Ann and Hester.

In The Chancell. No Altar Peice.
1. The Brick Pavement, on whch the Communion Table stands, hides the Inscription of a Flat Stone, which, as I was told, is in Memory of Mr William CADE some time Rector of Aldington, whose Wife is buried at Sellindge. See Page 27 [Sellindge}.

2. At The West End are 6 Stalls, on the Wooden Seats of 2 of them are carved These Coats. [1. A cross. 2. A cross patonce (no tinctures given, naturally].

3. On The South Side of the Communion Table, is a Gothic Peice of Work, against The Wall, which I Imagine to have been the Tomb of some Founder, or Benefactor to the Church. On it are also ye above Coats.

4. Here are several ancient Flat Stones; all without Inscription. And there are Some Remains of good painted Glass in the Windows.

In The South Chancell.
5. On a Mural Monument on the West Wall. [Arg. a fess wavy betw. 3 lions’ hds. erd. or BLECHYNDEN imp. Arg. a ln.rt.gu.]. Hic Jacet inclusum solido sub Marmore, Corpus Joh. Blechyndeni, Symnels pro Sede tenentis, Armigeri; hunc tandem lethalis, Funere trish; Calculus involvit, Morsq immaturae, secundis Connubijs junctum, numerosâ et Prole Parentem, Transtulit e Terris; ducelat Stamina Vitae, Ultima, Monctoniae, quam continet Insula Thanet. Hic jacet, at revirescit adhuc post Funera Virtus.

6. On a Flat Stone. Humfredus BLECHYNDEN de Colle Rufino, Armiger viii Jun. A.D. M.D.LXVII Christo publice sacratus ad. vtum. usq Novembris MDCXXXIV Deo, Patriae, Familiae. Sibi faelicitèr militavit, in novissimum, clangen te Archangelo, et redeunte e Caelis Exercitium Domino, triumphaturus Inimicum.

7. On Another Flat Stone. Here lieth interred, the Body of Mary, Daughter of Mr. Edward METCALFE of Woodstock in the County of Oxon. and Widow of Henry GREGORY, sometime Rector of Middleton Stoney, in the said County. She departed this Life, May 19 1707 aged 69. She left surviving 2 Daughters, viz. Grace, Wife of Mr. Thomas BRAMSTON of Waterhouse, in the County of Essex; and Mary, Wife of

8. William DEEDES, Dr. of Physick, of the City of Canterbury who buried her in this Part of his Chancell, beneath this Stone, placed to her pious Memeory, in sure and certain Hope of the Resurrection to eternal Life.

9. On Another Flat Stone. [Per fess wavy gu. & arg. 3 martlets counterchd. DEEDES imp. Or, 2 bars az. in chief a leopd. az. GREGORY]. Here lieth the Body of Dr. William Deedes, Son of Julius Deedes, Esq. of Hythe. He died 4 Decr. 1738 aged 79 Years. He practised Physick with great Integrity and Humanity, near 50 Years, at Canterbury. He was a charitable Neighbour, a sincere Friend, a good Christian. He left a Son and a Daughter, by Mary his Wife, who is buried in the same Grave. She was Daughter of Henry Gregory, Rector of Middleton Stoney, Oxon; and died 26 Oct. 1737 aged 64 Years. She was beloved and admired by all who knew her; The best Wife; The most Tender Mother; The most desirable Friend; truly pious; strictly religious; An Ornament to her Family; a Pattern to her Sex.

10. On a loose brass Plate, now kept in the Parish Chest, but, which was formerly fix’d to a flat Stone in this Chancell. Here lyeth buried that religious, and modest Gentlewoman, Margaret BLECHYNDEN, the late Wife of Richard ASHENDEN, late of Tenderden, Gent; who had by her said Husband, Five Sonnes and Eight Daughters. She departed this Life, in the Fayth of Christ the 30th Day of June 1596.

11. Here are 2 Other ancient Flat Stones, not legible. On One of which, I, with much ado, made out the Arms of GODFREY, at the Feet; and (in a Lozenge) some other Coat at the Head – but I could not tell whose. It looks like the *HONEYWOODs.
*I have, now, Reason to think it, ye Arms of BLECHYNDEN – as they intermarried with the GODFREYs, B.F.

12. In The Body. On a Flat Stone. Here lieth the Body of Richarde KNIGHT, Yoman who departed this Life the 20th of Desember A.D. 1616 aged 78 Yeares.

13. On Another Flat Stone, inlaid with ye Figures of a Man, a Woman, and A Group of 3 Sons. Another Group is lost. Hic jacent Corpora Johis WEDDEOL Gentilmanni et Matildae Ux. ejus; qui quidem Johannes obijt xx die Marcij A.Dni. MCCCCLXXV (1475/6) quorum Animat ppicietur Deus. Amen.

14. Two other Flat Stones without Inscription. One of them has been richly inlaid with Figures, Coats. etc.

15. This Church consists of The Great and South Chancells,
The Body and an Isle to the South. At the West End stands the Tower, which is very high, & commands a very extensive Prospect of The Sea, Coast of France etc (sic). In it hang 5 heavy Bells, all cast by John PEELE. A.D. 1705. The Great Bell bears ye Name of the aforemention’d William CADE, who was then Rector.

16. The Famous ERASMUS was Rector of this Parish, being presented by Arch. Bip. WARHAM. As was also Richard MASTERS, who was hangd at Tiburn 25 H.8. for being an Accomplice with Elisabeth BARTON, who was called the Holy Maid of Kent.

17. Here was formerly a Palace, and a Chace belonging to the Arch Bishop; the Latter still is call’d Aldington Frith.

18. The Church was dedicated to St. Martin, it is a Rectory in the Gift of The Arch Bishop. The present Rector is The Revd. Dr. CHAPMAN, who is also Rector of Mersham. 1759.

19. In The Church Yard, are Memorials of fa*gG, FORD, HOBBS, COZENS, LOYD, BRADLEY, LUCKETT, GREY, GODDARD, KILVERT, VIDGEN and WANSTALL.

20. There is a Fair Tumulus in this Parish, not far from the Roman Road which runs to Lympne.

1. I shall here give a True Copy of a Manuscript, in ye Hands of the Reverend Mr John CLOUGH, ye Present Vicar of Ashford, wrote by ye Reverend William WARREN, L.L.B. who was Curate of Ashford, in ye year 1712. This Book is by him call’d, Some Account of The Church, College (now Vicarage House), Free School etc. of Ashford in Kent. By William Warren L.L.B. Curate of Ashford 1712. Rev Bryan Faussettnoted1758. Illius quidem Loci, (etc).
[PARSONS copied the Warren Ms. before 1794. It was printed, in 1895, by THOMPSON, of Ashford, and transcribed by me from Thompson’s book. So I omit all B.F.’s copy of the original Ms. until he resumes his own additions to it. V.J. TORR].

2. Wm. WARREN. Trinity Hall Cambr. Nov. 29 1722. Thus far Dr. Warren’s Manuscript To which I have added the Coats of Arms, (i.e. as Many as are now remaining) which were omitted in his Account. And, have brought down ye Inscriptions to the present Year 1758 when, on visiting this Church, I was surprised to see, how many Inscriptions which were in Being in The Doctor’s Time, are now totally defaced and gone; and wch. without his Care, wd. have been forgotten. Br. FAUSSETT. Some Additions to Ashford; being a Continuation of The Inscriptions of ye Year 1758. And an Acct. of ye Coats of Arms, omitted by Dr. Warren.

3. On a Flat Stone near ye S. Door, with this Coat. [Arg. a bend cotised invected sa. imp. On a saltire invected a trefoil slipped]. William WHITFELD Gent died Nov. ye 30th 1739. Aged 66 Years, leaving Issue William, John, Elizabeth, Francis and Thomas. Reodus. Gulielmus Whitfeld, A.M. Praedicti Filius Natu Maximus, Coll: Jesu Cantab. Soc. obijt Prid. Idus Xbris, Anno Salutis 1742. Anno Aetatis 45. John Whitfeld died January ye first, in ye Year of Our Lord 1745/6. In ye 46th Year of his Age. Elizabeth, ye Abovementioned Daughter of William Whitfeld died April ye 28th in ye Year of Our Lord 1749, and of her Age ye 47th. Also Francis, Son of ye abovesaid William died June 19 1751 in ye 46 Year of his Age. Jane Relict of ye abovesaid William, died Nov. 27 1756 Aged 78 Years.

4. On ye Flat Stone for Mrs Anne IRBY [ob. Jan 23, 1680-1, aged abt. 16 months] (see Page 96) this Coat. [Arg. fretty sa. on a canton gu. a garland or].

5. On Another Flat Stone with this Coat. [A chevn. betw. 3 fleurs-de-lis imp. Arg. a spreadeagle sa. debruised by a bend gobony gu & or]. In this Vault lieth interrd the Body of Captain Wilfrid HART who departed this Life March the 28th 1720, in ye 46 Year of his Age. Here also lieth interr’d the Body of Gilbert ROSE, who departed this Life June ye 23d. 1722, in ye 70th Year of his Age. Also here lieth the Body of Elisabeth, Wife of the said Captain Wilfrid Hart, & Daughter of the said Gilbert Rose, who departed this Life August the 5th 1724 in the 44th Year of her Age.

6. On Mr WARREN’s Stone (see Page 102) is this Coat. [Gu. a lion rampt. arg. a chief checky or & az. imp. Arg. a chevn. purp]. (Samuel, ob. 16 Mar 1720-1, aet. 84).

In The South Chancell & Vest’rey.
7. On a very handsome Mural Monument, adorned with Military Ensigns etc. in ye South East Corner of ye Vestrey wth. this Coat. [Gu. 3 bars arg. imp. Az. a griffin statant & a chief or]. Beneath This Monument lies interrd the small Remainder of Arthur APSLEY of this Towne Esq. who near 20 Years with Loyalty, Courage & Good Conduct discharg’d the especiall Trust reposed in him by their Majesties KING WILLIAM & QUEEN ANNE, As Cornet, Lieutenant, and Exempt of their First Troop of Horse Guards. He married Mary, Youngest Daughter of George EVELYN of Godstone in Surry Esq. by whome he left no Issue. He died Dec. 29th 1719 in ye 50th Year of his Age. Near him also is interrd the Body of Arthur APSLEY, Father of the aforesaid Arthur, who died Dec. 4 1723 in the80th Year of his Age. Here also lieth interr’d the Body of Thomas Apsley of this Towne, who out of Filial Duty and Brotherly Affection erected this Monument to their Memory. He died June ye 7th 1736 in ye 58th Year of his Age. Near him also is interred the Body of Anne, Relict of Thomas Apsley, who died Feb. 12 1741/2. Aged 63 Years.

8. On a Flat Stone with this Coat. [3 crescents in a border erm. imp. Gu. 3 bars arg. & a canton erm]. (no tinctures). Here lieth interr’d the Body of James READER, late of this Towne who departed this Life Aug. 24 1727. Aged 52 Years. Near him also is interrd the Body of Elizabeth, Relict of ye aforesaid James READER, and Daughter of Arthur APSLEY. She died Oct. 17 1741. Aged 64 Years.

9. On Another – with this Coat. [Erm. 2 chevns. imp. 3 bends, a chief erm. (BULL)]. (no tinctures). Sub hoc Marmore conduntur Cineres Johannis FENNER, Generosi, hujus Oppidi non ita pridem Incolae et Ornamenti. qui obiit 15 Die Julij, Anno Dni. 1702. Aetatis suae 36. Vir erat multis certè Nominibus Memorandus utpote qui Fidelis Ecclesiae Anglicanae Filius, Orthodoxae Fidei Pietatem adjunxerit, Vitaeq Integritatem. Quinetiam (quod illi omnino dandum est Laudi) Feliciter monstravit benignam ingenij Venam. Sermonem festivum, Moresq Faciles, non tantum cum Religionis Gravitate convenire, sed Virtutem ipsam gratiorem redderet, et Magis amabilem. Uxorem duxit Saram, Thomae BULL de Mersham, Generosi, Filiam natû Maximam; Faeminam sane tali Viro dignam; quae obijt 5 Die Aprilis 1715 et hic juxtà jacet sepulta. 10. On Another Flat Stone with this Coat. [Or, a saltire sa. in chief a cresct. gu. for diffce. (DERING) imp. Az. a chevn. arg. bearing 3 crosses gu. betw. 3 pheons or (WIGHTWICK)]. Here lieth interrd the Body of Henry Dering, Gent, late of Shelve, who departed this Life January ye 15th 1752, Aged 37 Years. Here also lies interr’d the Body of Hester, Wife of the said Henry, who departed this Life Oct. ye 6th 1751. Aged 38 Years. They left Issue 4 Sons & 4 Daughters.

11. On Another. Beneath this Stone lie the Remains of a good Christian Elisabeth the Wife of Josias PATTENSON ye Younger, Gent. She died the 18th of May 1755 in ye 27th Year of her Age, leaving Issue 1 Son.

12. On Another. Here lieth Grace, Wife of Thomas WHITFELD, who died May 18 1752 aged 36 Years, leaving Issue Thomas, John, Francis, Lewis, Grace & Jane. Jane WHITFELD died May ye 3d. 1753 aged 3 Years. Here also lieth the abovesaid Thomas Whitfeld, who died Nov. ye 12th 1755. Aged 46 Years.

13. On Another. Here lieth Mary the Wife of John LAMB of this Towne who died June the 20th 1744. Aged 58 Years. Here also lieth Mary Daughter of John Lamb and Mary his Wife who died April the 4th 1748 aged 31 Years.

14. The 3 Tombs in this Chancell are all of them of very elegant & Costly Workmanship, and the Statues and Figures on them extreamly well cut. The Coat of Arms of this Family are as follows. I have omitted the ………. their being by Time greatly worn out & defaced. [Az. a chevn. engrailed betw. 3 leopards or].

South Transept.
15. On the Flat Stone for Mr. Elisha BRETT [ob. 11 Mar 1718-9) aged 43] (see Page 102 [not reproduced here]) is added the following Inscription. The Stone bears this Coat. [Or, crusilly fitchy & a lion rampt. gu. imp. Gu. a leopard’s head jesst.-de-lis arg.]. Here also lieth ye Body of Sarah the Wife of Elisha Brett, who died June the ……. Aged 49 Years.

16. On Another with this. [A lion passt. betw. 3 cinquefoils (no tinctures)]. Here lies interrd the Body of Catherine WELLER who departed this Life Dec. 25 1719 Aged 55 Years. She was Daughter of Mr Daniel PRITCHARD, Minister of South Harting in the County of Sussex.

17. On Another with this Coat. [Tierced:
1). BULL as Before P.147.
2). Arg. 3 battle-axes in chevn. sa. (GIBBS).
3). Arg. a chevn. sa. betw. 3 bulls’ heads caboshed gu. (CURTEIS)]. Thomas Bull Gent died Jan. ye 19th 1709/10. Aged 50 Years & is here interr’d, he had 2 Wives. The First was Sarah, Daughter of Robert GIBBS, Gent, by whom he had Issue 3 Sons and &1 Daughter, of wch. their Son Thomas only is surviving. He* (*seems error for "she") died Jan. 6 1701/2 Aged 39 Years, & is here interr’d. His Second Wife was Sarah the Dr. of Thomas CURTEIS Gent. Thomas Son of Thomas Bull abovesaid Gent died Feb. 11 1716/7 aged 25 Years & is here interr’d.

18. On The Stone for Mary ye Wife of Matthew WAGE [ob. 21 Apr 1716 aged 35] (see Page ye 101[not reproduced]) are since added the following Inscriptions.
Here also lieth the Body of Matthew WAGE who died May 21 1737 Aged 75 Years. Here likewise lieth Chapman, Son of the said Matthew & Mary, who died Oct. ye 2d. 1740. Aged 26 Years. Under this Stone also lieth ye Body of John FRENCH who died Dec. 16 1750. Aged 54 Years. Who left Issue 1 Son & 1 Daughter by Mary his Wife. Also Mary, Second Wife of the above said Matthew, died Apr. ye 28th 1754 aged 60 Years, who left Issue 1 Son & 1 Daughter, viz. Matthew & Mary.

19. On The Stone for Martha LAKE [ob. June 26 1680, aged 59] (P.96[not reproduced]) are since cut the following Inscriptions. Here also lieth the Body of Mary Lake, late of Ashford Widow, who died Apr. 16 1720. Aged 63 Years. She left Issue 5 Sons & 3 Daughters. Likewise here lies the Body of Mary, Wife of Thomas BARRET, & Daughter of Thomas Lake, Gent & Mary his Wife, who died Aug. the 1st 1739. Aged 57 Years.

20. At The South East End, or rather Side, of this Transept, has formerly been a Rood Gallery, The Stone Stair Case, wch. led to it, is now remaining.

North Chancell.
21. On The Stone for Mrs Mary TOURNAY [ob. 27 May, 1716, no age given] (see Page 101[not reproduced]) is this Coat, and additional Inscription. [Arg. a chevn. betw. 3 oxen passt. sa. imp. Erm. on chief gu. 3 pears or]. Here also lieth the Body of The said John Tournay, who departed this Life February the .. 1735/6 in the 56th Year of his Age. He left Issue 2 Sons and 2 Daughters, by Anne his Second Wife. Daughter of C. WORGER of Smeeth.

22. On The Stone for Frances, Wife of Edw. WADE ([F.W. ob. 30 May 1700, no age given] (see Page 100[not reproduced]) this Coat. [Az. a saltire betw. 4 escallops or imp. A bend vair]. On the Stone for Edw. Wade, Gen. [E.W. ob. 15 May 1711, aged 37] (see page 101[not reproduced]) is this Coat. [Tierced. 1). Wade. 2). A griffin Segrt. 3). A chev. betw. 3 escallops].

23. On a Flat Stone. Beneath this Stone are deposited The Small Remains of Judith the Wife of Isaac RUTTON. She died on ye 9th Day of January 1753 leaving Issue 3 Sons, and 3 Daughters after having experience’d the Uncertainty of Human Happyness 33 Years.

24. On The Stone for William CLERKE, who died 14 Dec. 1706 is also this following Inscription. Deborah Clerke, Wife of the said William Clerke, died April the 28th 1728 in ye 63d. Year of her Age, & lies here interred.

25. The Date on the Beam over this Chancell (see Page 91) seems to Me to be 1595. Tho the Former 5, has some Appearance of a 3, owing, perhaps to the Unskillfullness of ye Person who cut it – it being something like a 5 backwards, thus ٦ – But, what Figure.

North Transept.
26. On The Stone inlaid with 2 Figures etc. for Thomas FOGGE, Esq. (see Pages 93 & 107[not reproduced]) is the following Coat. [Fogge, 1.116, Ashford imp. ¼ly 1&4). A bend. 2&3). ¼ly 1&4). a lion rampt. 2&3). a fret (no tinctures)]. (T.G.F. note: FITZALAN quartering MALTRAVERS).
27. On ye Stone for Daniel NOWER [bur. 20 Aug. 1647, aged 29] (page 99[not reproduced]) this Coat. [(no tincture for field) 2 bars gu. on a chief 3 crescents gu].

28. On a Neat Monument on ye N.Wall wth. ye Coat. [Erm. a cross engrailed gu]. In The Vault beneath lie interrd the Bodies of John NORWOOD late of this Towne and Mary his Wife, by whom he had Seven Children, Six thereof are in the said Vault with them. In Memory of whom their Surviving Son Edward has erected this Monument this 20 Day of Sept. 1743.

29. On a flat Stone underneath. 1732. In this Vault lie ye Reliques of Elisabeth, John & Mary NORWOOD. Here also lieth John Norwood, Father of the above mentioned.

North Isle.
31. On a Flat Stone. Under This Stone lieth interred The Body of Jane, Wife of Thomas BIGG, who died Dec. 6 1731. Aged 61 Years.

South Isle.
32. On a Flat Stone – with this Coat. [CURTEIS, 1.149, Ashford imp. CARTER, 1.77, Godmersham]. Here lieth the Body of Thomas Curteis, Gent, who died Sept. 23 1718. Aged 76 Years. Here also lieth the Body of Elisabeth The Wife of Thomas Curteis. She died July 13 1717. Aged 71 Years.

33. Over The Great West Door is This Inscription in Golden Letters. This Church was new Pwe’d and Paved In the Year of Our Lord 1745. The Revd. John CLOUGH, Vicar. George ELWICK, Richard GREENHILL, Church Wardens.

34. There are now 8 Bells – 2 Smaller having been added to the former Six, A.D. 1762. They were founded by LESTER & PACKE of London. In The Tower hang 6 Heavy Bells, thus Inscribed.

On The Wood Work, over the next Pillr, Southward, are the Arms of ye SMITHs (as at Page 149 [not reproduced]) who were Lords of the Manor of Ashford. And, On The Wood Work, over the S.E. pillar is their Crest; viz. A Bears Head (as it seems) collar’d & chain’d.

39. On The North Side of the Bridge (on the Out Side) Are to be seen the following Coats and Inscriptions, on a Square Stone.[3 shs. set in line:
I. TOKE, 1.54, Boughton Aluph.
II. Arg. on a bend engrailed & cotised sa. 3 molets or (ANDREWS).
III. Gu. on a + arg. 5 molets sa. (RANDOLPH)]. This Bridge was erected at the Charge of the whole County, An. Dom. 1688. Sr. Nicholas TOKE, Knt. and William ANDREWES, and William RANDOLPH Esqrs. Commissioners; and Thomas BODDS, Thomas BIGG, and Thomas JOHNSON, Workmen.

40. The present Vicar, viz. A.D. 1757 is the Revd. Mr John CLOUGH; who is, also, Rector of Monk’s Horton. He was succeeded, A.D. 1765 by the Revd. Mr Charles COLDCOLL, Prebend of Rochester.

1. On a Monument on The E. Wall, on ye N. Side of The Communion Table. [Or, a fesse embattled betw. 3 wheels az.]. In a Vault in This Chancell lieth interred The Body of Mrs Eliz. CARTWRIGHT, Widow, who departed this Life Dec. 2 1713. As also of Gervas Cartwright Esq. her only Son, who died Apr. 6 1721. And Mrs Eleanor and Mrs Anne Cartwright, her Daughters, who died ye one, Jan. 20, the other Feb. 19 1721/2. At their Desires this Chancell was beautyfied and adorned; and, by their Order a Charity School was erected in this Parish, and munificently endowed forever.

2. On a Flat Stone. with the above Coat. H.S.E. Gervasius CARTWRIGHT, Armiger Londini natus hujus Parochiae, dum vixit Decus et Tutamen. qui sinceram in Deum Pietatem in Cognatos Charitatem in egonos Beneficentiam in Omnes deniq Morum Suavitatem ita exercuit, ut, non magis omnibus peramatus vixerit quam desideratus occiderit. Vitam tranquillè instituendo, semper felix evasit. eandem aequa Serenitate Animi deponendo, felicior. Cum enim Mors ipsa, apertis armata Terroribus, certum intendebat Telum mirâ Constantiâ crudelem imperteritus excepit Ictum; et Deo Conservatori Animam placidissimè reddidit. 3. On a Brass Plate, on a Flat Stone, under the Fig. of a Woman. The Coats lost. Pray for the Sowle of Jane KERRIEL,/Ye Friendis alle that forth by pass;/In endlesse Life perpetuell,/That God it grant Mercy and Grace./Roger CLETHEROWE her Fader was./Thowgh Erthe to Erthe of Kynd retorne,/Pray that the Sowle in Bliss sojourne.

4. On a Monumt. on The E. Wall, on the S. Side of the Communion Table. [Arg. 3 pheons sa. on a chief sa. a greyhound courant arg. imp. Arg. a bull statant gu. on a base (?ppr, for earth: now coloured brown though hatched \\\\ as though for purp.].

5. In a Vault in This Chancell lieth interred the Body of Henry ROBERTS Esq. Grandson of Sr. William Roberts of Wilsden, in ye County of Middlesex, Bart. who died Feb. 25 1718/9. He had Issue, by Susanna his Wife 3 Sons and 2 Daughters, viz. Katherine, Henry, Harry, Susanna, and Henry, of which the first and the last only survived. The rest are with him in the same Vault. As also Mrs Eleanor Roberts, his Sister who died Feb. 1 1719/20. In the same Vault is also interred the Body of Mrs Susanna Roberts, late Wife of the above Henry Roberts Esq. obijt the 11th of Feb. 1730/1. Aet. 44.

6. Two Other Flat Stones, wch. have the Appearance of Antiquity – whose Inscriptions, and Brasses are lost.

7. Under a Gothick Arch in the North Wall, is the Figure of an armed Man lying Cross Leg’d, at full Length, on an Altar Tomb – without either Coat or Inscription. Philpot (Fol.52), says it is in Memory of 1 of The Family of LAVEROCK; and, that, in his Time, his Arms were painted on his Sheild.

8. On The same Side of this Chancell, but more Westward, and between it and the North Chancell, on an Altar Tomb also, lies the Figure of Another Man, arm’d and Cross Leg’d as the former; and, under him the Figure of a Woman, both at their Full Length – without Inscription. On The Sheild of the Man has been painted his Coat Armour; on the Feme Side, I, with much ado, made out the Arms of SEPTVANS – als HARFLEET, as in ye following Page – but the Baron Side was quite effaced. Philpot says, this Tomb is in Memory of Sr. John GOSHALL, a worthy Knt. who lived in the Reigns of E.3 & R.2 – and, that his Arms, viz. Az. a Ly: ramp: within Semee of + Arg. – he thinks ye Fig. underneath, was design’d for his Skeleton – Fol.50. But I am sure it was done for a Woman.

In The North Chancell.
9. Under an Arch in the North Wall, on a large and high Altar Tomb, lie ye Figg. at full Length, of a Man in compleat Armour, and a Collar of S.S. And of a Woman, in The Dress of her Time, both large as the Life. All the Brasses are torn off, except a small One, fixt to ye Top of the Arch, which bears the following Coat. [Az. 3 winnowing fans or (*SEPTVANS) imp. A fesse erm. betw. 3 fleurs-de-lis in chief (no tinctures) & 3 fishes naiant in pale in base*The Motto to the Arms of Septvans was, "Dissipabo Inimicos Regis mei ut Paleam". alluding to the Coat – viz. 3 Thrasher’s Vans, or Fans. (see App. to Somner’s Cnterbury. Edit. Battely F.32).

10. On The South Wall is a very sumptuous Monument, bearing the Figures of a Man and a Woman, kneeling at a Faldstool. Under the Woman are the smaller Figures of 7 Daughters, all kneeling. The Marble under the Man (on which, I imagine were ye Figures of the Sons), is lost. It has the following Coats and Inscription. [3 shs. in line – I & III small, II large.
I. SEPTVANS as Above imp. ¼ly:
1&4). Lozengy gu. & az. 13 martlets (or?) 3,2,3,2,3 [HENDLY – see My M.S. Book of Heraldry].
2&3). Arg. a saltire engrld. erminois betw. 4 torteaux.
II. ¼ly of 7:
1). Septvans.
2). Arg. 2 bars or (sic), debruised by a bend sa. bearg. 3 crescents or.
3). Az. a chief indented arg.
4). Arg. on a fesse az. 3 torteaux (sic).
5). Lozengy gu. & or, a chief arg.
6). Gu. 3 boars’ heads couped arg.
7). Sa. a chevn. or betw. 3 hawks’ heads erased arg. imp. Arg. crusilly & 3 fleurs-de-lis in a border invected sa.
III. BERESFORD imp. Gu. 6 bezts., each bearg. a fl-de-lis sa.].
Here lyeth The Bodies of Sr. Thomas SEPTVANS, alias HARFLEETE, of Moland in this Parishe Knt. who died the *………../ And the Lady Bennet his Wife, Daughter of Michael BERESFORD of Westram in the County of Kent Esq. which Lady Bennet died the 2d. Day of July A.D. 1612 being of the Age of 46 Yeares. *The date never has been cut.

11. On a Flat Stone. Here lyeth the Body of Sr. Thomas SEPTVANS, alias HARFLETE, of Moland in this Parishe, Knight, who died ……/ And the Lady Bennet his Wife, who died the 2d. Day of July 1612.

12. On Another Monument on the S. Wall, wch. bears a Man and a Woman, kneeling at a Faldstool. [Az. a fesse & in chief 2 + +lets fitchy or]. Here lyeth The Body of Christopher TOLDERVEY of Chartham, Sone and Heire of Christopher Toldervey, late of London Esq. deceased. Hee had to Wife, Jane, Daughter to Sr. Thomas HAREFLEET, Knight, with whome not long livinge he departed this Life Apr. 25 1618 in the 32d. Yeare of his Age. In Acknowledgement of whose kind Love, as well ye said Jane his Wife, as Richard CAMBDEN Gent, his Kinsman, have caused this Remembrance of Him, to bee here erected.

13. Round the Edge of, and on a Brass Plate fixt to a Flat Stone, & under ye Figures of a Man and a Woman, are the Following Inscriptions – and ye same Coats as on the Mont. for Sr. Tho. SEPTVANS, P.145 – I have, therefore, drawn only this. [Impaled sh. with writing only: Septvans as Before imp. HENLY quartering as at P.145]. [natus fuit xx Die Julij](now lost) ….. Pulvis et Umbra/…../Faex, Fumus, debita Massa Neci./Quid gemis [genus] humanum in Christo? divina Propago/Christi solius Morte redempta Deo./Ergo, nosce Deum, Christum cole, sperne Cadaver;/Aeternâ Vitâ, Morte fruere, piâ.

14. Round The Verge of, and on a Brass Plate fixt to, another Flat Stone, wch. also bears the Figures, in Brass, of a Man, a Woman, and 6 Children; under wch. last are these Names "Thomas. William. John. Jane. Mercy. Jone". This Stone also has on it the same Coats as are On ye Monument for Sr. Thomas SEPTVANS, P.145 – and the Following, wch. is not on that Monument, viz: [*SEPTVANS imp. Az. 3 mascles & a chief or (CHALONER)]. *This Coat is also painted on a Board wch. hangs in Beakesbourne Chancell. Hic jacet Corpus Walteri Septvans, alias HARFLET, de Cheker, in Parochiâ de Ash, Armigeri, qui natus fuit Die Sti. Michaelis, A.D. 1567, et obijt 4 Die Junij 1642, et Jana Uxor ejus, Filia Johannis CHALONER de Fulham, Armigeri, quae nata fuit 23 Julij 1576 et obijt 4 Die Dec. 1626. Nominis egregium Decus, et solidata Propago./Nunc Cinis (amplexus Conjugis Ossa) jacet./Quàm bene disposuit commissa Charismata Servus,/Si Fas sit, dicas, utilis ille fuit./Impiger et prudens, Vitae Documenta reliquit,/Et moriente Omnes hinc didicere mori.

15. On a Brass Plate on another Flat Stone. [Per bend sa. & arg. 2 spreadeagles countercharged (BROOKE)]. *John Brooke of the Parishe of Ashe/Only hee is now gone./His Days are past, his Corpse is laid/Now under this Marble Stone./Brooke Streete hee was the Honor of,/Rob’d now it is of Name,/Only because hee had no Seede,/Or Childe to have the same. Knowing that all must pass away,/Even when God will, none can denay./He pass’d to God in the Yere of Grace/A Thowsand, Fyve Hundredth, Fourscore and two it was.(1582-3) /The Sixteenthe Day of January, I tell you playne/The Fyve and Twentyth Yere of Elizabeth’s Raigne. *an Acrostick.

16. On Another Flat Stone. [2 chevns. betw. 3 martlets imp. 3 molets](no tinctures). Here lies The Body of Mr Thomas SINGLETON, late of Molland, in this Parish, descended from the Ancient Family of the Singletons of Broughton Tower, in Lancashire. He was educated in the College of Peter House in Cambridge, where he took his first Degree in Physick, and afterwards married Mary, Daughter of Mr Abraham DAWES, Merchant of London who with one Son (John aged 10 Years) survived him. He died Dec. 7 A.D. 1710 in the 40th Year of his Age.

17. On Another Flat Stone. [Az. 3 talbots passant or (PEKE) imp. Sa. a chevn. betw. 3 leopards’ heads or (WENTWORTH)]. Here lieth interred the Body of the virtuous Dame Elisabeth Peke, Relict of Sr. Edward Peke Knt. and Daughter of Sr. George Wentworth Knt. Brother to the most illustrious Thomas, late EARLE of STRAFFORD. She departed this Life the 29th Day of Feb. 1691/2.

18. On Another. Here lieth the Body of Thomas PEKE, of Hills Court in this Parish Esq. eldest Son to Sr. Edward of the same Place, Knt. who departed this Life the 7th of August 1701 in the 29th Yeare of his Age. He married Elisabeth, eldest Daughter of Mr Anthony BALL of Bromley, in Kent, by whome he had 6 Children, viz. Thomas, Edward, Ann, Eliz. Margaret, and Sarah.

19. On Another. [PEKE as Above imp.Brown (hatched |||| for purp.) a cross engrld. erm. in the 1st ¼ a molet, for difference]. Here lieth interred the Body of Thomas Peke of Hills Court Esq. (Son of Edward Peke Esq. of the same Place) who had to Wife Katherine, Daughter of Dr. William KINGSLEY, Arch Deacon and Prebend of Canterbury; by whom he had Issue 6 Sons, and 6 Daughters: whereof are left, Sr. Edward, Peter, Charles Damaris, and Elisabeth. He died the 8th of October, Anno 1677. aged 74 Yeares.

21. On Another. Here lies interred the Body of Mrs Margaret MASTERS, the Wife of Mr John Masters, Second Daughter and Coheiress of William WILDE Esq. of Goldstone in this Parish, who departed this Life the 18th of April 1758, in the 58th Year of her Age.

25. On Another. Here lieth interred the Body of Mrs Mary BAX, Wife of Mr John Bax, Gen. who departed this Life 14 June 1743 aged 58 Years.

26. Also the Body of the abovesaid John BAX, Gen. who departed this Life, July11 1759 aged 77 Years. Hark, from the Tombs a dolefull Sound!/My Ears attend the Cry./Ye Living Men, come view ye Ground,/Where You must shortly lye.

1&4). HOUGHAM as at P.128 (St Mary’s Sandwich).
2). Or, on a chevn. gu. 3 molets arg. betw. 3 elephants’ heads erased gu.
3). BROOKE as at P.147.]. Near unto this Monument lies the Body of Richard Hougham Gent. late of Weddington, of this Parish, and Elisabeth, his Wife, who was the Daughter of Edward SAUNDERS of Norbon nere Sandwich, Gent, which said Richard and Elisabeth had Issue 3 Sonnes and 1 Daughter, viz. Michael, Edward, Solomon, and Ann. The aforesaid Michael and Ann are also interred here. This Monument was erected according to the last Will, and Testament of the aforesaid Ann Hougham deceased, who was baptised the 17th of January 1601/2 and departed this Life June 9 1661. If Grace and Vertue could have deified,/Here lies interr’d a Maid who ne’er had died./Her Charity on Earth she spent, her Love/On Heav’n; fit only for the Saints above./Let theise frayle Ashes a Memento be,/Her Life a Pattern, and a Legacy. Le Neve, Vol.1, P.8, says that the following Inscription was in this S. Isle, but I cd. not find it. (NB. It is in ye Body on ye S. Wall, near the Pulpit). "Piae, cordatae, modestae, amabiliq Faeminae, Fidelissimae Conjugi, dulcissimaeq Dorotheae (Filiae Gulielmi TIGHLMAN Gener. ex Susannâ Filiâ Thomae WHETENHALL armig). 27. Aetatis Annum agenti, Tres Filios, Thomam, Johanrem, Vincentium, Filiasq duas, Deboram, et Dorotheam chara Pignora, superstites, Marito relinquenti, 18 Die Septembris, Anno Dom. 1605 (circiter tres Horas post Partum Vincentij praedicti) suavitèr in Christo obdormienti. Thomas ST NICHOLAS maestissime vidnatus, piae Memoriae, gratiq. Animi ergo, hoc Monumentum statuit.

Vincentius ST NICHOLAS, alias SENNICOLAS alias SENNICLAS, Generosus, obijt certâ Spe resurgendi, 20 Die Augusti, A.D. 1589, circitèr Aetatis Annum 58. qui Uxorem duxit Mariannam Filiam Edvardi BROCKHILL, Armigeri, quam superstitem, cum tribus Liberis, viz: Merciâ, Filiâ, Thomâ et Timotheo Filijs, ex ipsâ procreates, reliquit. Quibus viventibus Deus sit propitious" Civitatem futuram inquirimus.

Tit. 2.11.12. etc. havinge Married Elisabeth the sole Daughter of Thomas ST NICHOLAS of this Parishe Esq. Dec. 25 1655 dyed in much sweet Peace 27 July 1656 in the 42d. Yeare of his Age. Ps.112.6. In The Church Yard are Memorials of, ABRAHAMS, ADAMS, BAKER, BAX, BURROWS, BUSHELL, CARR, CHAMBERS, CLEVELAND, CLARINGBULL, DENNE, FENNEL, FOART, GIBBONS, GOLDFINCH, GODSON, GOADBAN, GIBBS, HORNE, HENNEKER, LASLET, LUSHINGTON, MARTEN, MOTT, MINTER, NEAME, PACKER, PETLEY, PORDAGE, REYNOLDS, RICHARDSON, READ, SHERRY, SOLLY, STODDARD, SANDERS, THOMSON, TOMLIN, THRUM, VALDER, WELLARD, WOOD, WILMOTH & WELLS.

35. In Philpots Time there were several Altar Tombs here, which belong’d to the Family of SEPTVANS – Als. HARFLEET "all which (he sayd) had their Figures & Arms insculpt in Brass, annext to their Sepulchres, wch. by the Impression of Time, and the Assault of sacrilegious Hands, are quite dismantled, and torn off" Fol.51. There are at present several anct. Altar Tombs remaining, whout Inscription, and almost ruinated, which, I suppose, are those he mentions.

36. Over The Porch (wch. fronts to The North), is a Free School, endowed with a Sallery of £30 Per Ann. by the ‘forementioned Family of CARTWRIGHT – see the Epitaph – Pag. 143.

37. On each Side of The Entrance into The Porch, is an ancient Monument; they both have been adorn’d with Brass, which, together, with their Inscriptions, are now Lost.

38. This Church was dedicated to St. Nicholas. The Tithes are impropriated to the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, who appoints a Curate here. The Present Curate, is The Revd. Mr Benjamin LONGLEY 1760.

39. A Stone Coffin is said to have been dug up, at Goshall in this Parish, about the Year 1710.

40. Mr Somner, in his Roman Ports and Forts, Page 7, says that, at Overland, in this Parish, there was formerly a Chapel of Ease to Ash, as Ash itself was to Wingham; and, also, another Chapel of Ease at Nevil’s Fleet, in this Parish.

Margaret his relict and wife of the Reverend William Dixon by whom she left issue one son, Henry William, died 17 December 1817 age 55. Ann Hodges died 19 August 1822 aged 26. 49. Here liethe the body of Frances Newman HODGES wife of Thomas Hodges of this parish, Gentle man. She was daughter of William Honywood and sister to Sr John Honywood of Elmsted in this county Baronet. She died 21 June 1757 in the fifty fifth year of her age and left issue one son – Thomas. Also the above Thomas Hodges who died November 18 1767 aged 70. Side Augustus Joseph Hodges born 2 October 1829 died 31 October 1906.

This tablet was erected by his Parishioners as a token of their grateful recognition of his kindness and zeal in promoting improvements for the benefit of the Parish and as a Testimony to his faithful discharge of all the Duties of his sacred office.

Near this place in this church lyeth the body of Mr Richard Kingsland late of this parish who departed this life the 31st day of March 1731 aged 54. Also the body of Mr Richard Kingsland his only son who dyed the 17th day of June 1730 in the 32nd year of his age. Mr William Everest erected this monument in memory of them.

In the Chancel

Above the plate a shield of brass with his Arms, viz - a Lion rampant gorged with a collar and a hain thereto affixed reflexing over his back; charged on the shoulder with a mullet.

On the South side within the rails on a gravestone is a brass plate with the following inscription in Roman Capitals -

53. Here lyeth interred the body of Dorcas Walter / the eldest daughter of Humphrey Michell of old / Windesor in the Countie of Bark. Esquier, the / wife and widdow of John Walter of this / parish & Countie Esquier who departed this life / uppon the Seaventh day of May Anno Domini / 1630 and in the 57 yeare of her age.

On the South side within the rails, on a gravestone is the following inscription in Roman Capitals -
54. Here lyeth interred the bodie of Michael Smith, gent, who tooke to wife Dorothy Walter, youngest daughter of Thomas Walter of this Parish, gent, and departed this life the fourth day of August anno domini 1633 aeatis suae 56.

On the South side is a mural monument of white marble with this inscription in Roman Capitals -

55. Neare unto this place lyeth the body of Bennett Warde, widow, somtyme wyfe of captaine Ambrose Warde of Hith in the county of Kent, esquire, by whome she was the mother of foure sonnes, John, William, Ambrose and George, and three daughters Alice, Bennet and Elizabeth. She was the daughter of Thomas Turney of Brockwell in the parish of Saltwood, in the said county Esquire. She lived a mayd 22 yeares, a wife 32 yeares and widdowe 24 yeares, having performed the part of both a constant and lovinge wyfe and of a kynd and carefull mother, livinge in the feare of God, and dying in the faith of Christ Jesus, and here resteth in hope of a glorious resurrection. She departed this life the 12th day of March Anno Domini 1641 being of the age of 78 yeares. This monument was erected and set up in remembrance of her the 31st day of May, anno domini 1644.

Above are these arms viz - azure a cross patee or. At the bottom on each side 2 coats viz - azure a cross patee or, impaling argent a chevron sable between three cows tripping sable.

56. On the East side is a mural monument of touch and alabaster, with the effigies of a gentleman and lady in the dress of the time, kneeling at an altar beneath them, on a tablet of black marble is the following inscription in Roman Capitals -
Here lieth interred in an assured hope of a joyfull resurrection John Walter late of this parish Esq., Justice of the Peace and corum within this countie in the raygne of kinge James and our now dread soveraigne king Charles, in which place hee approved himself just, upright and sincere, administringe true judgment and justice without respect of persons. Hee tooke to wife Dorcas Michel, the eldest daughter of Hunphrey Michel late of Olde Windsor, in the countie of Bark. Esq. with whom hee lived comfortably, happy and religiously 36 yeares, and at whose truely christian motion agreeinge with his owne charitable disposition, hee by his last wil and testament hath given and bequeathed unto the poore bountiful legacies, as unto two of the poorest men of this Parish, unto two of the poorest men of the parish Ashe, and unto two of the poorest men of the parish of Hartley, in this countie, unto every of them large coates of good russet cloathe from this forth for ever; moreover unto two of the poorest widowes of women in every of the said three parishes unto every of them a gowne of good russet cloath; and this gift to begin immediately after the decease of his said deere wife Dorcas and soe to continue to the end of the world; which legacies the said poore people are to receive yearly upon the XXVth day of December, caled Christmas Day; upon which day they are to repaire to his dwellinge house in this Parish, between eight and nine of the clocke in the morninge and from thence to come to this place, where he hath appoynted a sermon for them and for his paines he hath bequeathed to the minister of this church Xs a yeare for ever; moreover after sermon the said poore people are again to returne to his howse and there receive a plentiful dinner; and for the due performance of this his charitable deedes hee hath tyed and bounde certaine landes for ever. Thus did this good gentleman blesse and honour his Saviour in his poore members. Hee departed this life upon the XXVIIth daye of Februarie in the yeare of our Lord 1625 and in the yeare of his age 68, commendinge his sowle into the hands of his maker, leaving his bodie to this place. His charitie to the poore and the sorrowe for his losse unto his deerly beloved wife who in respective affection unto him and his everlivinge and neverdyinge memorie, hath erected and set up this monument.

57. In a window on the North side are two coats the same viz - or a cross gules charged with five castles of the first between four fleurs de lis azure issuing out of as many turfs vert. These are the arms of the Grandisons. In the same window is the coat of the Fawkhams viz - argent a fesse gules in chief two roses or roundels. The colour is faded but the coat in the South window of the chancel may explain it viz - argent a fesse gules in chief two roundels of the second.

In the East window are the arms of England, but the whole field as well as the three lions are greatly corroded by time.

The West window is almost entire, the preservation of which is owing to its having been wired on the outside. In it are several portraitures, as the Virgin Mary teaching the young Jesus to read. The figure of an ancient man with a staff in his hand, 58. probably designed for Walleran de Faukham who flourished here in the reign of Henry the Second or some one of that family, as the arms of Fawkham above described are over his head.

3. Head James WICKENDEN of this Parish died February 23 1807 aged 62. Elizabeth his wife died September 17 1814 aged 85.

50. A table tomb. Mr James Bedell, gentleman, tenant of the Manor House and Farm of Ruxley, held by succession in his family ( also buried near this spot) for more than one hundred years. He was highly esteemed and much respected in this parish and neighbourhood and by all who knew or heard of him for his singular talents and many useful and benevolent services. He died March 10th 1793 aged 63. Leaving to deplore the loss of an affectionate husband and parent, his wife Elizabeth and four children viz. Elizabeth, Anne, James and William of whom his two sons William the youngest who died March 21 1800 aged 51 and James the elder who died October 17 1803 aged 37 are buried in the same grave with their father, as is also William the infant son of the above William Bedell, deceased September 14 1796 aged 4 months and 16 days. Also Mrs Elizabeth Bedell, relict of the above Mr James Bedell died 28 November 1803 aged 70.

Top. In a vault underneath lieth the body of Roger Frith late of this parish who died May the 30th 1701 aged 79. He left issue John who was buried here July the 6th 1714 aged 60. He married Sarah, daughter of Antho: Neighbours of East Wickham who was likewise here buried April 23 1728 aged 54 and left issue by the said Sarah three sons and four daughters viz. Sarah, Elizabeth and Henry lye buried here; John Mary Susan and Neighbours are now surviving. Neighbours Frith the last survivor of the family died 17 January 1776 and his remains lie here by those of Anna Maria his wife and of his children. Mary and Sarah who were interred 14 May 1737 and 6 November 1739 respectively.
North side. Here lieth the body of Ann Maria Frith wife of Neighbour Frith and daughter of William Upfold of London who departed this life September 18 1771 aged 53. [Drawing of coat of arms.]

In a vault near this stone were interred in January 1753 the remains of Edward co*kayne of the City of London. He married Elizabeth, daughter of John Frith of this place who was interred in the same vault 5 May 1726. They had issue John Andrews and Edward who died 26.3.17[? 43 or 5] and 13.10.17[?53]. The former of whom lies interred with Them remains of the latter are deposited in a vault beneath, by the side of whom lie those of Frances his wife, daughter of Edward Lucas of the ....geford in the county of Berks who died 30 January 1763. They had issue John Andrews who died 31 May 174[?9], Edward who died 22 March 17 [?5] 0, Ann who died - November 1751, Edward John Andrews' of whom one lies in a vault near this stone and two are deposited in a vault beneath. Edward John Andrews their only surviving heir who, in compliance with the will of Neighbour Frith, esquire, late of this place, deceased, has by authority of Parliament assumed the name of Frith only in regard to the .......... and that of his own son Edward co*kayne Frith who died 11 April 1780 aged .. months and lies interred here, has caused this stone to be inscribed.
North side. Sacred to the memory of Margaretta, wife of the Rev. Edward co*kayne Frith of Bridgen Place and also North Cray, daughter of the Rev. James Armetriding, rector of Steeple Aston, Oxon. She died 3 June 1827 aged 33 years.

On the North side. Here lieth the body of Jeffery Hetherington, esquire, late of North Cray Place, who died 17 June 1767 in his 78th year. Beloved, honoured and lamented by all who knew him. He was an honest, good moral man and a sincere, virtuous and pious Christian.

South side. In the same vault are also interred the remains of his most amiable and beneficent brother and heir, the Rev. William Hetherington, M.A., who died December 1 1778 aged 80. To do good and to distribute were the delight of his life.

68. A tomb. Underneath this stone lyes the body of Mrs Frances Holcombe daughter of the Rev. D. Holcombe, Prebendary of Canterbury by his first wife Frances, sister of H. Hetherington, esquire. She died 6 May 1763 aged 61 and was buryed here in hopes of a happy resurrection to eternal life.

69. The Rev. Thomas Moore, M.A., for more than 50 years was the much respected rector of this and the adjoining parish of Footscray died February 1 1823 aged 85. Also Mary his wife died August 1819 aged 80.

Within this vault is laid the body of Mr John Hakewill of Margaret Street, Cavendish Square, [London, W.1.] died 21.9.1791 aged 48. By his side are deposited the remains of his widow, Anna Maria, who died July 15 1818 aged 71. Proved her love for him by increased solicitude for their children's temporal and eternal interests.
West end. Sophia [?4] daughter of John and Anna Maria Hakewill died August 13 1843 aged 57. Mary, the second daughter of same died 12.7.1843 aged 65. Emma, third daughter and last surviving child of the above died 21.11.1855 aged 74. Anne Lucas, eldest daughter of Henry Hakewill of Ulster Terrace, Regent's Park. She was born 12.8.1805 and died 6.6.1868.
South side. Jane Catherine daughter of Henry and Sarah Hakewill died 19 April 1809 aged 7 months. Charles, youngest son of John and Anna Maria Hakewill died at Chicacole in the East Indies July 11 1815 aged 26.

154. Thomas Carleton Skarratt born 4.10.1857 and died 3.9.1908. He was vicar of Kemsing for 19 years. [There is a 2 light window in the North aisle to him with figures of St. Thomas Canterbury and St. Richard of Chichester. Also the figure brass in the chancel.]

155. Mr Robert Walter late of Greenwich died in this Parish 14.7.1863 in his 64th year. Mrs Charlotte Walker his wife died 3.11.1869 aged 67.

156. Harriot Jones wife of Douglas Jones of the Parish of East Malling died 1.12.1886 in his 87th year. Harriot elder daughter of the above died 14.5.1891 in her 73rd year. Amy Jones youngest daughter of the above Harriot and Douglas Jones died 2.10.1905 in her 62nd year.

157. Sarah Sykes wife of Robert Sykes died 16.9.1894 aged 69. Sarah Ann Sykes daughter of the above died 12.5.1910 aged 54. Robert Sykes died 7.4.1913 aged 89.

A memorial together with a coat of arms. [drawing] Ann Bunce wife of James Bunce, Esq. of this Parish and daughter of William Saxby, Esq. of Starborough Castle in Surrey. Died after a long illness 12.3.1770 aged 45. Erected by her husband.

The remaining stones in the North churchyard are all modern and of recent date.

The church when it was enlarged and the North aisle added was repaved so that no old flooring remains. There is a tablet on the South wall of the chancel but I could not see the inscription. C.1840 -I should say.

The old chancel screen has been made up into a new and very ornate one with coving, loft, Rood, Mary and John and Cherubim and the Royal Arms under the Rood - the chancel looks very "Comper-esque". It is very ornate with much oak carving and shields of arms and a great Tester over the altar,. On the floor in the centre afore the altar step is a modern brass with canopy &c to a priest - ? Mr Skarratt (No.154).
