al2-lm MRS. MORSE GOES FREE Actress Escapes Insane Asylum In Washington. ROOSEVELT GETS THE $25,000 Mother Who Tried To End Lives Of Herself And Children Makes A Pathetic Plea To The Court. Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.1 Washington, Aug. 16.

The insanity case against Mrs. Ida Morse, formerly of th. chorus of "The Other Girl" company, whose mental condition has twice been made th subject of an inquisition In the District Supreme Court, the Jury each time falling to agree, was dismissed by Justice Barnard today. Mrs. Morse, "through her attorney, Thomas J.

Mackey, told the court if such action -were taken she would immediately leave the Jurisdiction of the courf. Being released, she proudly left the courtroom, saying she expected to return to her former home in St. Louis. The case against Mrs. Morse has at tracted widespread attention.

She was ar rested the latter part of June on complaint of members of Congress, hotel keepers and others with whom she came in contact. She was a familiar figure at the Capitol during the closing days of the Congress. It was alleged that she made the claim that tha $25,000 appropriated by Congress to pay the traveling expenses of President Roosevelt was really intended for her own personal expenses while she sojourned in Washington. Following her arrest she was sent to the Government Asylum for the Insane upon recommendation of police surgeons. Later she was brought into the lunacy court and had two trials.

At the first trial she caused some excitement In the courtroom by refusing to go back to the asylum when the jury could not make up its mind as to her condition. A number of other cases were brought to the attention of Justice Barnard today, among them being the case of insanity against Mrs. Ida May Hopkins, who sev eral weeks ago attempted to end her own life and the lives of her two young children by turning on the gas at her home in Rose- dale street northeast. The woman took the stand in her own defense and admitted the attempt to kill herself and children, saying that she felt so depressed that she "Just had to do it." Mrs. Hopkins, it was stated, had been sewing in the carpet department of a local store when she became ill.

Her illness, coupled with tha thought that she had no money with which, to feed her children, it Is thought, brought on despondency. To the Court she made an appeal that she be allowed to go back to her children, saying: "If you will let me go home, I promise never again to give any more trouble. If yoa send me back to the asylum, I will never get any better; I will grow worse." The jury returned a ver dict finding her of sound mind. William D. Baxter, a member of the lo cal fire department, was adjudged insane and committed to the asylum.

Three physicians testified that he was suffering with, Incipient paresis. His wife and mother-in- law both testified that he had threatened to commit suicide and that once he threat ened to kill his wife. On leaving the witness stand Baxter's mother-in-law stopped at his chair and kissed him affectionately. POLICEMEN ON -TRIAL Blnefield Man Died In Cell Whila They AVfere On Duty. Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.

Washington, Aug. 16. Policemen Thomas Hanley and J. F. Potter, of the Metropolitan Police, who were on duty at the Sixth) Precinct Station House on August 11.

last, the day on which H. P. Totten, of Bluefleld, W. Ya.t died in his cell, were before the police trial board, in session at the First Precinct Station House today. Every detail of the occurrence was gone Into and a large number of witnesses examined, including Coroner Nevltt, Captain Byrnes, of the Sixth precinct, and several officers and privates.

A. Swindells and Capt. Daniel Sullivan, commanding the First precinct. The charges against the policemen were signed by R. IL Boardman, acting major and superintendent of police, the men being accused of gross neglect of duty.

PEASE RESIGNS Dr. II. L. Brotra To Be Reduced 15 Xnmbers In His Grade. Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.

ashington, Aug. lb, The President and Secretary of the Navy Bonaparte have set tled the cases of Assistant Surgeons Harry Lee Brown and Theodore N. Pease, United States Navy, who were recently tried in this city on the charge of "cribbing" 1 their examinations for promotion. The court found Pease guilty, as charged. of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gen tleman and of scandalous conduct, and sentenced him to be dismissed from the serv ice.

It is understood that Pease, through his attorneys, requested to be allowed to re sign "for the good of the service." Word was unofficially received from Oyster Bay today that this proposition had been ac cepted and approved by the President Assistant Surgeon Harry Lee Brown, who was tried for the same offense, was not found guilty on all the charges and specifications, but only partially guilty on his own admission that he communicated with another officer, presumably Assistant Surgeon Peace, during his examination for promotion. There was excellent reason to believe that Dr. Brown was not criminally guilty In having received information during the examination to assist him in his work, but inasmuch as he communicated at all and thus so seriously violated the naval regulations, the court sentenced him to be reduced 13 numbers In his graae. u.nis wui operate so as to delay his promotion for 10 months, and Is considered a light sentence. The Ice Wagon.

They may talk of their automobiles That gure fabulous price. But gin us the -wagon That summer can brag on The rambling old wagon -with ice! It greets us -with dripping an' rickety -wheels, Bnt eire it "Hooray!" as it rumbles an' reels; Oh. it wins in the race with the automobiles The rumbling old wagon with, ice! 1 Atlanta C-ffnatafaittoa- 1.
