A. Personal informationName:Level: Havo 4Mentor:Course: EnglishTeacher:Assignment: Book report 2Date: 20 oktober 2021101 EquationChapter 1 Section0B. General information1.a. Wuthering Heightsb. The title refers to the name of an isolated house built on the top of a hill atthe Yorkshire moors. It is a centuries old farmhouse. The name describes thestormy weather around the house. It is a metaphor for the wild and passionatecharacters, who live there.c. The title fits the book well, because the house is the childhood home of themany of the book’s main characters.2.a. The author is Emily Brontë. In the beginning her pseudonym was Ellis Bell, amen’s name.b. Emily Brontë (1818-1848) was born in Yorkshire. She and her sisters went toa harsh boarding school. Later in life Emily lived with her siblings in their homeon the Yorkshire moors. She was an English novelist and poet. She wrote onlyone novel. She and her siblings endured great tragedies. Five of the six ofthem died young. Two of her sisters, Charlotte and Anne, are also respectedwriters.3.a. She published this book in 1947 at the age of twenty-nine, one year beforeshe died of tuberculosis.b. It is written in the Victorian period. Many novels in that time were about peopleovercoming their difficulties and had a happy ending. Victorian novels wereoften about social distinction between classes.Generally people were born into a class and stayed there. Because of theisolated location, the Yorkshire moors, it seems that the characters aredisconnected from society. Class distinctions are constantly changing. Thisbook is more about the strong inner feelings of the main persons. It is a Gothic Romantic novel, because of the presence of ghosts and othermysterious dark elements of peoples nature.

Sometimes you hear the other persons, like Isabella, Heathcliff, Cathy, speaking through Nelly Dean or Mr. Lockwood.b. This is an example where Cathy is speaking through Nelly dean. “My love forLinton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, aswinter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocksbeneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I AM Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am alwaysa pleasure to myself, but as my own being.”8.a. A new tenant, Mr Lockwood, of Thrushcross Grange visits his landlordHeathcliff, who lives at Wuthering Heights, a farmhouse on the Yorkshiremoors. Because of a storm he stays overnight. During the night Mr Lockwoodhas nightmares, and endures a ghostly visitation of a girl, Catherine Linton. When he is back at the Grange he asks his housekeeper Ellen Dean (“Nelly”)to tell him more about her. She tells the story of two families, the “calm”Linton’s and the “wild” Earnshaw’s.23 years ago, Mr Earnshaw (Senior) brought home a gipsy orphan, Heathcliff, and treated him as his favourite son. His daughter Catherine loved Heathcliff, but his son Hindley hated him. Hindley was send away for his education, andmarries Frances. When Mr. Earnshaw dies, Hindley comes back and tries todestroy Heathcliff, and treats him like a servant. Frances dies soon after givingbirth to Hareton. Unhappy Hindley becomes an alcoholic.Catherine is taken in by the Linton’s. Catherine promises to marry EdgarLinton. Heathcliff is heartbroken, and moves away vowing revenge.3 years later Heathcliff returns as a rich man, and meets Catherine and Edgaragain. He wants revenge and marries Edgar’s sister, Isabella. Isabella leavesher cruel Heathcliff very soon, but is pregnant of a boy, Linton. Catherine givesbirth to a daughter, Cathy, but dies afterwards. Heathcliff misses her andwants to ruin the Earnshaw’s and the Linton’s. Will he succeed?b. Used sources: Skinner, S. C. My own interpretation of the book9. a. The underlying message is that another person's life can be touched by the goodness or badness of others. b. For example, Catherine shows her good will by giving Hareton a book, promising to teach him to read and never to mock him again. ''10. a. The most important protagonist is Heathcliff. The other main characters are: Mr. Lookwood, Elllen (“Nelly”) Dean, Hindley Earnshaw, Catherine Earnshaw Linton, Edgar Linton. Catherine (“Cathy”) Linton Heathcliff Earnshaw, Hareton Earnshaw, b. Heathcliff is a dark skinned gipsy looking mysterious man. He is a very passionate loving man with a strong character, and driven by revenge. He is the foster son of Mr. Earnshaw. At the end he doesn't want to take revenge anymore and stops eating and dies.11. Name of protagonist 1: Mr. Heathcliff Name of protagonist 2: Catherine Earnshaw Linton Positive: Negative: Positive: Negative: passionate Vengeful impulsive childish12. a. The most important moment in the book is the moment that Catherine meets Heathcliff for the last time before she gives birth and then dies. They are both blaming the other for their separation. Catherine begs Heathcliff to forgive her. b. Heathcliff answers: “I forgive what you have done to me. I love my murderer – but yours! How can I?” (p. 175) Heathcliff loves his own murderer (Catherine) but cannot forgive Catherine’s murderer (who is also Catherine, because she starved herself) (Skinner, 2020)13. a. Although the strong love of Heathcliff and Catherine ends tragically. The next generation, Hareton an Cathy find love, and so the story ends happily. b. I did like the ending because, peace and order are restored. There is also a nice symmetry in the family tree. Catherine Earnshaw becomes a Linton, and Cathy Linton becomes an Earnshaw for example. I dislike the fact that Cathy and Hareton are cousins, and wants to get married.
